Tung Wah. Sometimes it's hard to tell if they are talking about the set or the rules, at any rate this is the name on the little booklet with this set, because the manufacturer is at the bottom of the cover I think it's pretty safe to assume that this is the name of the rule set or a general name for the game. It goes on to say it is also known as Ma-Jong, Pung Chow, Ma-Ling and Ma-Juck . The ideograms on the sliding door are very close to those on the cover of the book. This set has 144 wood tiles, numerous celluloid strips with dots for betting and a pair of dice. It comes in a nice wooden box with 5 drawers, I have other sets from this company, one is in a nice black embossed paper covered wooden box and others that are in simple cardboard boxes. Although I won't add all versions to this section of the book because the tiles are identical, they will all appear in my Museum. The tiles measure 1 5/32" x 13/16" x 17/32", the face is embossed celluloid the back is wood. The designs painted. The box measures 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 3 1/2". The book measures 7 3/8" x 4 3/4", it has 12 pages. This set really reminds me of Pung Chow sets, especially the dragons, this could be a very early version of what finally became Pung Chow, or Pung Chow just took the dragons and the crane. It's much easier when you have a picture of these tiles side by side to compare (which I have done). |
