Mah Jongg Sales of America was purchased in the mid 20s by Parker Bros., however, they continued to sell the better quality, imported sets under their name. I do not believe that this set is actually a MJSA set or a Parker Brothers set. The designs were such an important part of MJSA and these designs are not similar in any way. The box is tin, the lid is hinged and because the inside of that lid is not painted and very shiny I cut that part off of the picture showing the contents, I also added a picture showing both the top of the box and the bottom. The top of the box is exactly like Babcock's Little Red Book, so it's pretty safe to say that this set was sold in conjuction with the publication of that book. I have another tin box, green instead of red, there is a real MJSA set in it with all the trade mark designs.
There are 148 solid bamboo tiles, a horn Mingg jar with wind disks, bone betting sticks, a copy of the smaller book by Babcock (pictured), a pair of dice and one sheet of rice paper with all the trade marks on it.
The tiles measure 1 1/16" x 13/16" x 7/16", the designs are embossed (lightly) and
painted. The box measures 8 " x 6 1/2" x 2 5/8". The book measures 6" x 4 1/2" and
has 16 pages. |
