The Hong Kong set is one in a series of sets from Parker Bros. It comes in a 'lucky red' cardboard box with 4 drawers holding the tiles, there is no drawer or compartment
for betting sticks or dice. The booklet is the small version of
Babcock's rules that comes with nearly every version from Parker Bros. that I have seen. The hardcover version of
Babcock's Little Red Book was sold separately. Personally, I think that Parker Bros. made sets so everyone could afford them, and this is probably the least expensive of all. I have not yet found a catalog or ad to confirm that.
There are 144 laminated wood tiles. Maybe on this set someone got the layers mixed up and that's why one whole suit is darker on the face than the others, sorry I wasn't there--
it's just my guess. The backs painted orange. The designs are nicely designed and painted, crisp and easy to look at.
The tiles measure 1 1/4" x 7/8" x 3/8", the designs are embossed and painted. The box measures 8 3/4" x 5 1/2" x 3 ". The booklet measures 6 1/8" x 4 1/2" with 12 pages. Although Parker Bros. had offices all over the US, they also had offices in Hong Kong, I believe that all their sets were made abroad. |
