From Parker Bros., the Ning Po set. This set is identical to one in an unmarked red cardboard box I have so if you have already seen it and think the tiles look awfully familiar you now
know why. I suspect that the other set was one sold by Mah Jongg Sales of America before that company was purchased by Parker Bros. Ning Po is a river in China, it is also the name of a city. During and post WW2, there was an area of the city called the European settlement, where all the people from Europe and the US lived, including Joseph Babcock and many of the other names in Mah Jong;
This set has 144 wood tiles, numerous colored wooden sticks for betting and a pair of dice. This is a
four-drawer cardboard box, the bottom drawer has 2 layers of tiles and a compartment for the sticks. This example is in excellent condition so there really isn't any excuse for the ink not showing up well other than the paint is just too light with a natural wood background.
The tiles measure 1 1/4" x 7/8" x 1/2", the designs are embossed and painted on natural
wood. The box measures 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 3 1/2". The book measures 5 3/8" x 4 3/4", it
has 16 pages. |
